The 76ers will still smart from Chris Webber’s salary this season, but hope to put that trade behind them in ’09. On the upside, one player that is proving to be key to the Knicks’ future. His deal continues to look better as time passes – and the kid can definitely shoot. Philadelphia will have to deal with the fact that Allen Inverson is gone. But Andre Miller is a veteran point guard, and Joe Smith is strong as well. The 2007 draft looks good for Philadelphia. They are rebuilding, and can use their draft picks to add depth – and have money for big name additions in ’08. They did better than expected after the Weber and Inverson situations – and ticket buyers can expect a turnaround this coming season if GM Billy King plays his cards right.
From Dr. J to A.I., the Philadelphia 76ers have featured some of the NBA’s top stars. With his dazzling dunks and high-flying antics Julius Erving delighted Sixers ticket holders for years in the 1980s. Now, it’s the determined Allen Iverson who is electrifying crowds at the Wachovia Center. Iverson is playing under the direction of another 76er all-time great in head coach Mo Cheeks. Iverson also had a talented group of role players to punch the 76ers’ ticket back to the NBA Playoffs. Chris Webber is back to bring another dose of star power to the Sixers, and youngsters Samuel Dalembert, Kyle Korver and Andre Igoudala are continuing to mature.
The Philadelphia 76ers began their first year as the Syracuse Nationals in 1946 and played in Syracuse till 1963. In 1963 the Warriors packed up and moved to San Francisco and the Nationals quickly moved to Philly and changed their name to the 76ers.
The Philadelphia 76ers won an NBA Championship in 1967 using the talents of Wilt Chamberlain. Chamberlain, who led the NBA scoring for a number of years, established himself as a team player by dishing the basketball off to his teammates. The tactic allowed the 76ers to win 45 games in the first 49 games they played and finish the regular season with a scorching 68-13 record. Entering the playoffs, the 76ers made quick work of the Cincinnati Royals. Philadelphia now faced the Boston Celtics, a team that had a long string of playoff series wins unmatched in the league. But the 76ers were on a roll and the ended the Celtics streak in five games. In the NBA Finals the 76ers romped to a six game series win over the San Francisco Warriors to capture the NBA Championship.
